On Friday the 14th of July, Figaro made tracks down to the petite, enigmatic and tremendously charming Church of Bang Bang Boogaloo to catch the sold out E.P. launch ‘Alive’ of Melbourne outfit, nyck.

'nyck' (pronounced n.y.c.k.) is the musical project of Nick Acquroff and Dom Garrard. Having made their debut with the single ‘Decision’ in 2016, the release of their E.P. has garnered considerable interest, and with good reason. With their extremely minimalistic approach to music, nyck’s sound is founded on two impenetrably powerful voices, capable of standing proudly with only a few instruments backing them, where other fragile voices may be found out, nyck soars above. Even with the full band nyck had accompanying them on stage at the Church of Bang Bang Boogaloo on Friday (14th) there was an inescapable feeling that with nyck ‘less is truly more.’ A sentiment which nyck bang home with gentle gusto at every turn. An impressive on stage synergy leaves you feeling, that while the 'churches' smoke machine splutters out smokey fumes and sounding like it is suffering from late stage emphysema, that the duo of Nick and Dom is as symbiotic as a musical partnership comes. The pair were constantly shooting each other glances and seemingly in a perpetual rotation on the keyboard, nyck delivered a beautifully intimate performance lavishly liberal in thanks, anecdotes and eye watering music. Not only was the show a powerful demonstration of nyck's prowess as musicians but also a showcase of their attention to detail and top end production with evident consideration vested in establishing a live atmosphere which elated sensation in the air at the Church of Bang Bang Boogaloo that the crowd bore witness to an cozy, personal performance which they will later reflect on fondly while they watch nyck lap up the plaudits they deserve.
