Premiere: Kayroy in Love
The Italo revival has been somewhat of a runaway train for several years now. Its renaissance has been globally felt, last year Panorama Bar being transformed into a euphoric ‘Italorama Bar’ and important online havens for Italo diggers have been revived, notably, Cybernetic Broadcasting System community under its new alias, ‘Intergalactic FM’. Campari is back on the menu and the genre’s jaunty music has found itself a regular feature of dancefloors once again.
Joining vanguard of the Italo Disco juggernaut is a new imprint, ‘Boots & Legs’, a label collective of foot tappers who have tasked themselves with reworking the sounds of 80’s synth pop and Italo who put the music ahead of namesakes and prestige. They enter the Italo foray with their debut pressing; an all Melbourne VA record. A two-side, four-track EP - ‘Boots & Legs vol.1’ released strictly on wax.
‘Kayroy in Love’ is a beatific call back to the breakneck sonics of the 80’s. It is a rapid Italo burner with dominated by a playful exchange between high pitched synths and guitars and backed by an array of charming Italo novelties; a zephyr of pads, claps, rolling 80’s drum machines, flutes, even a jet stream sample. It crams all the Italo signatures in, yet it never feels cluttered. With a runtime just seconds shy of the seven minute mark the tune is superbly layered with engaging sections, it’s climax, a captivating, jubilant section where a vocal sample is introduced and takes centre stage, in dramatic fashion.
