Copresents '17 Preview
A collaborative production between the music industry students of RMIT and Mushroom Group, CoPresents brings the booking power of one of the nations largest music industry groups and the relatively unique, inner-CBD open-air venue inside the campus of RMIT. In a city with a burgeoning music scene and history which clutches to its cherished mantle as the cultural centre of Australia there is a significant dearth of open-air venues available in the city, none of which are suitable for a multi-stage event of the stature of CoPresents. A fledging endeavour in only its second year, CoPresents has cranked up the gear for its sophomore edition and boasts a line-up difficult to immediately categorise, the restaurant classification of ‘Modern Australian’ seems appropriate, scheduling considered with the expectation that the sun will be shining, beers will be drunk and curated with local produce in mind. Split between two stages; the Red Bull Sound Select stage and the Soothsayer stage. One for ‘live music’ one for the selectors.
Headlining the former is Remi. Spearheading the revision of Australian hip-hop with easy-going jazz, RnB and soul influences at the production end and a mixture of more traditional ‘old-school’ and the new-wave Chicago hip-hop sound and flow Remi has a diverse appeal and has lapped up plaudits across the globe, in many ways a landmark artist who is garnering much needed international appreciation for the often plagued hip-hop scene of Australia.
Fresh back on home soil from tours across Europe which saw the pair bear the flag at Dimensions in Croatia and across the UK, GL are expected to return to native Melbourne a different animal. A snowballing reputation which seemingly grows with each live performance is telling of the pairs infectious energy on stage. It's easy to imagine when listening to the recorded works of GL that their music would very likely translate into live magic, the cosmic synth melodies, dance-inducing vocals, rhythms and percussion almost seems to spell out Ray Bans and frosty tins under the ‘category 11 extreme UV sunshine’ of Melbourne. It shouldn’t take anyone for surprise then that GL’s groove has been endorsed by what can only be described as one of the most sought after selectors on the global circuit currently, one half of Tuff City Kids, owner of his own label, Running Back, and the magic fingers behind the track of our upcoming Summer, ‘Surrender’, the “dolphin man” Gerd Janson in his remix of ‘Grip’.
Closing out our preference list on the Red Bull Selects stage we have Sydney-sider Wilaris. K and Melbourne-grown ensemble Billy Davis & the Good Lords. With only 3 productions and an official remix to his name, Wilaris. K could be deemed an artist whose reputation proceeds him with such a budding catalogue of work, but its a reputation well deserved. Dark, ethereal, strangely emotive and profoundly invigorating, Wilaris. K’s sound tempers between progressive techno and electronic productions akin to Moderat, Bonobo and Bibio, Wilaris. K will do well closing the Red Bull Selects stage with an intimate live performance which tantalises the senses just thinking about it. On the other end of the spectrum, Billy Davis’ ‘Justice League’ assembly of soul, funk, RnB and gospel musicians excites in a different manner entirely. On the back of his latest release, ‘A Family Portrait’ Billy Davis casts a larger shadow over the Australian music scene than ever before. The sound of brass horns live and a full stage band ensemble seems to stimulate something inside the human body and contagiously effects the crowd before them - Billy Davis & the Good Lords are a classic live music staple in Melbourne now, you’d do well to find out why.
Francis Inferno Orchestra isn’t exactly wet behind the ear anymore. Having put together a diverse, varied catalogue under his aforementioned moniker he’s also released a layered, multi-textured ambient record (the type of experimentation only a seasoned producer would dare tackle) under a new alias, the remarkably appropriate ‘Veranda Culture’ which also acts as the title for his new label. A veteran for Melbourne parties, FIO has had booties shaking in the Victorian capital since way back in the days where Australia had a respectable cricket 11 and he shan’t be stopping anytime soon.
Wax’o Paradiso have been building a strong reputation as essential party movers in the nation for a long time now, a reputation which bears fruit of tremendous local affection in Australia and this is never more evident than in the nations party capital, Melbourne. Fantastic selectors and natural born party-ers are a dangerous mix and Wax’o’s Cosmic Verandah events are a testament to both, with a finger on the pulse of the crowd and an attentive understanding of their desires, the Wax’o collective inspire playful fun with each selection, the warm fondness shared between both Melbourne and Wax’o has been rewarded with a Boiler Room slot at Sugar Mountain and is one of the most endearing, mutually-beneficial relationships you’ll come across.
